Valencian Names of the Inhabitants of Peníscola, Easter 1549

--Gunnvǫr silfrahárr

Introduction

These names are taken from Llibreta de Compliment Pasqual, a book of Passover compliance from the Diocese of Tortosa. This list was compiled before Easter to document which of the inhabitants of Peníscola were confessed and therefore eligible to participate in the celebration of Easter. This includes people from seven years of age and older.

The original article from which this data comes is:

In 1549, Peníscola had 163 households, and 402 people eligible to make confession. Of these, only six are marked as not confessed. Four of these (marked ·+·) apparently had been captured by North African pirates: two are said to be captured (catiu), while one is in Bogia and the last in Algeirs. Two men (marked ·o·) are shown as unconfessed with no reason given.

Masculine Names

Men usually had a single given name. I found one man with two given names, Pere Ramon Martí, who was being distinguished from another householder, Pere Martí. The only other man with two given names was Miquel Martí Gironi.

Occupations

While most of the inhabitants of Peníscola were undoubtedly farmers or fishermen, only a handful of men and one woman are listed with a profession. The profession does not seem to be operating as an occupational byname in this data.

Raw Data

In the Llibreta de Compliment Pasqual, each household is indicated by ca. (casa), followed by the people in that household aged seven and older, beginning with the head of household, and usually followed by his wife (muller), sons (fill), daughters (fillia), manservants (criat), and maids (criada).

Some households were headed by widows (viuda) or widowers (viudo). The householder's father (pare), mother (sogra), brother (jermà, cunyat), or sister (jermana) might live in the household. Children are sometimes described as married (casat, esposat, esposada) or unwed (fadrí, "bachelor"; donzella, donsella, "maiden").
