Editing cross-reference formats

In a printed document, cross-references often include page numbers to help the reader find the target item. Online, these page numbers are irrelevant since the user can click the hyperlink and jump to the topic itself. Therefore, some cross-reference formats used for print documents need to be modified for online use. In most cases, cross-references are changed to just <$paratext>. Publisher automatically creates a hyperlink of the cross-reference.

Note: Often, cross-reference definitions for headings include curly quotation marks (") and ("). If you don't want your output to contain quotation marks, you can edit them out in the XREFs tab.

Here's how to edit cross-reference formats:

  1. Display the Properties dialog box for the whole project or a specific file (see Viewing mappings for details).
  2. Click the XREFs tab.

  1. To change a cross-reference format, click anywhere in the row containing the style to make it editable, then type in your changes.
Note: The online replacement format definition uses only FrameMaker cross-reference building blocks, not WebWorks Publisher Standard Edition macros. For details on these building blocks, refer to the FrameMaker documentation.
